What is early childhood special education? Who is eligible? Who do I contact?
Early Childhood Special Education is individually planned activities designed to enhance the development of preschool children age 3 through 5; services is provided in accordance with the Individual with Disabilities Education Act, 1997 (IDEA).
A child may be eligible for special services if he/she is experiencing difficulties which interfere with normal development in the following areas: speech/language, vision, hearing, motor skills, behavioral/social skills, self help skills, cognition/readiness skills.
The following services can be provided to the family at no cost: screening, evaluation, developmental instruction, speech/language therapy, and physical/occupational therapy.
Services can be provided in a variety of settings including but not limited to: Private Preschools/Day Cares, ABC Preschools, Head Start, Home Based, Itinerant.
